As a child, Joelle grew up at the facility for children with special needs. With her mother being a teacher on staff, Joelle learned from a young age the value of diverse backgrounds and individual needs that exist within every person. As a licensed clinical social worker, Joelle loves the complementary nature that goes into being a therapist- she believes it takes both your brain and your heart to practice well. Graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, Joelle's clinical experience includes areas ranging from acute crisis such as domestic violence requiring emergency shelter, to ongoing chronic conditions such as pediatric diagnoses.
Each of us humans come with pain as a prerequisite to living. Sometimes, we are more aware of how our pain affects us and our relationships, while other times we walk around making things way harder than they should be- just completely unaware of what’s happening. The privilege of her job is witnessing patients make the choice that their life can be better than what it is. Some people come to therapy for an identified reason, (I’m not happy in my marriage”), while others come more with a theme weighing on them, (“I’m useless.”) Therapy is about collaborating together to integrate the pain of your story in a way that doesn’t dismiss it, but is examined and reshaped to stop dominating your life.
Joelle works primarily through a psychodynamic lens, seeing adolescents, adults, and families struggling with their inner world- depression, resentment, trauma, disappointment, anxiety, secrets. With processing the past, leaning into the present, and acknowledging the future- the hard can become more manageable, and the good can feel more accessible. With whatever it was that had you looking into therapy, don’t go through it alone. If you’ve tried therapy before and didn’t like it, consider giving yourself another chance. Life, as you know, often needs us to be brave enough to try again.
